Start Preparing for Flu Season Now

Fall may have only just begun, but the beginning of autumn means that flu season is right around the corner. While it may seem as though you have some time before flu season arrives, it is never too early to start preparing and arming yourself against the colds and flu that run rampant during this time of year. The more prepared you are for flu season to hit and the more preventative actions you take now, the better off you will be.

Here are just a few easy, yet effective steps you can take to prepare yourself for the upcoming flu season before it hits in full force.

  1. Disinfect the home. Now is a great time to do a real deep fall cleaning of your home. Once you have, make sure that you stock up on disinfecting products and get in the habit of cleaning areas of the home where germs spread the most. This includes things that people touch most often like remote controls, countertops, door handles and sink knobs. While you’re at it, get some hand disinfectants that you can place around the house so you can stay germ-free throughout the day.
  2. Stock up your medicine cabinet now. There is nothing worse than being hit with the cold, only to find you don’t have any medication or supplies on hand, meaning you have to make a miserable, flu-filled trip to the local drug store. Put fever reducers, pain relievers, cough syrup and more in your medicine cabinet, just in case you need it. This is also a good time to check the batteries on your thermometer.
  3. Start with some new healthy habits now. The healthier your body is, the better equipped your immune system will be to fight off cold and flu germs. Start drinking more water, exercising regularly and eating a healthier diet filled with fruits and vegetables. You should also make an effort to sleep more and reach for that 8 hours of sleep per night—rest is one of the best ways to prevent and fight off illness.
  4. Go in for your flu shot. Many people don’t go in for their flu shot until we are in the midst of flu season. We advise you get your flu shot by Halloween, so try and plan for that now. The flu shot is one of the best ways to help keep the flu away from your home so make sure that the whole family gets vaccinated.
